It all began in 1930 in the forests surrounding Burma. Mr M. Manal, the founder of Himalaya Wellness Company, curiously looked on as villagers fed the roots of a local herb to calm a herd of agitated elephants. This herb was Rauwolfia Serpentina, the inspiration that led to the creation of Serpina®, the world’s first natural antihypertensive drug which was launched in 1934. Mr Manal embarked upon the journey of uncovering the mysteries of Nature at a time when herb-based healthcare was looked at with skepticism. Fuelled by his vision of bringing the best of Nature’s solutions backed by scientific research to people suffering health concerns, he was determined to contemporize Ayurveda through modern technology. With a single hand-operated tableting machine bought after pawning his mother’s bangles, he strode ahead on the road less travelled and full of challenges. It took him four years of extensive research to formulate the first offering, Serpina®, which laid the foundation for Himalaya’s strong foothold in research. In 1955, came the historic breakthrough that established Himalaya as a symbol of trust in the Indian healthcare landscape. Liv.52®, a formulation for liver health, became the best-selling flagship offering and a name synonymous with brand Himalaya. Ever since, as a head-to-heel problem-solving brand, Himalaya has introduced many other iconic products such as Septilin®, Cystone®, Bonnisan®, and Rumalaya® forte, which reinforced the trust of millions of customers, making Himalaya a household name. Broadening horizons, Himalaya diversified into Personal Care, BabyCare, Wellness, and Animal Health while consolidating all portfolios under one umbrella, “Himalaya Since 1930”. Today, Himalaya is a leading global health and personal care brand with close to 500 products sold in over 100 countries – touching millions of lives every day and realizing the promise of Happiness through Wellness in every home and heart. 11 “The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patient in care of the human frame, in diet and in the cause and prevention of disease.” —Thomas Edison — ‘My child keeps falling ill often! I think he has low immunity. Which foods should I include in his diet? What should he avoid eating? Will immune boosters help?’ These are a few common questions to which parents seek answers. I am a pediatric immunologist and deal with children who have very low immunity. Parents need to know what is normal and what needs immediate medical attention about the immunity of their children. Children with low immunity fall sick repeatedly, and their parents consult several doctors before getting an appropriate diagnosis. On the other hand, healthy children may fall ill sometimes and do not often need any medical tests. When children develop repeated fevers, parents wish to know if their kids need any special tests. This book shall not only answer this crucial question but also guide young parents on the right practices for helping their children build a healthy immune system. An attempt has also been made to eliminate myths surrounding immunity, immune boosters, and the like. I sincerely hope parents enjoy reading this book and feel more confident and comfortable handling their children’s immunity-related issues. — Dr Sagar Bhattad MBBS, MD (Pediatrics), DM (Pediatric Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology) Consultant, Pediatric Immunologist and Rheumatologist Preface

CHAPTER 1 Our Body’s Personal Army – The Immune System Our body has a smart defense system called the immune system. It acts like a personal army that fights off germs such as viruses and bacteria. This system includes white blood cells, antibodies, and protective barriers that work together to keep us healthy.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN Key Defenders of Immunity: • White blood cells – Act like policemen, traveling through the body to find and destroy germs. • Antibodies –Tiny proteins that recognize and fight infections. Vaccines help create antibodies in advance. • Skin – A strong shield that blocks germs from entering the body. • Tears and mucus – Wash away unwanted invaders before they cause harm.

CHAPTER 1 Our Body’s Personal Army – The Immune System Immunity Gets Stronger Over Time: • The immune system remembers germs and fights them faster the next time they appear. • Mild illnesses help strengthen immunity by training the body to respond better. • As chi ldren grow, their defense system improves, making them more resilient. Parents play a key role in strengthening their child’s immunity. Nutritious food, adequate sleep, and active play help build a strong immune system. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and probiotics supports gut health, while outdoor activities and exercise improve circulation, helping immune cells work efficiently.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN You help your child develop a strong, natural defense system against infections, by encouraging healthy habits!

CHAPTER 2 What Keeps Children Healthy? Good health depends on the genes we inherit and the environment we live in. While some children may be born with weaker defenses, most often, everyday choices shape a child’s health. Here are the key things that help: Healthy food: A balanced diet provides the nutrients a child’s body needs to grow and fight off infections. Foods rich in vitamins and minerals help build strong immunity. • Vitamin C (found in citrus fruits, tomatoes, and bell peppers) boosts the body's ability to fight germs. • Vitamin D (from sunlight, eggs, and fish) helps strengthen bones and improves the immune system. • Proteins (like meat, fish, eggs, and lentils) support muscle growth and the body's ability to heal. • Probiotic-rich foods (like yogurt) promote good gut bacteria, which help digestion and boost immunity.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN Regular exercise: Activities like running, playing, and jumping make the immune system more active. Good hygiene: Good hygiene practices, clean water, and clean surroundings protect kids from infections. Less screen, more sleep: Sleep is important for the body to heal and grow. Avoiding too many antibiotics: Using too many medicines unnecessarily can reduce good bacteria in the tummy. Drinking water – Keeps the body hydrated and removes toxins.

Sunlight exposure – Helps absorb Vitamin D for strong bones and immunity. Emotional well-being – Love, laughter, and a stress-free environment make kids healthier. Staying away from smoke: Cigarette smoke, even from others, harms a child’s defense system. Vaccination – Protects against serious diseases and builds immunity CHAPTER 2 What Keeps Children Healthy?

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN ese small habits make a big di erence in keeping children strong and healthy!

Yes, babies are born with weak immunity, but it gets stronger over time. In the first few months, they rely on protection from their mother before their immune system develops. How Do Babies Get Immunity? • Placental Antibodies: Pregnant Mothers pass protective antibodies (called IgG) to their babies through the placenta. These antibodies help defend against infections for the first few months. CHAPTER 3 Do Babies Have Low Immunity?

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN • Breastfeeding: Breast milk contains IgA antibodies, which coat the baby’s digestive tract and protect against harmful bacteria and viruses. It also has immune-boosting proteins and white blood cells that help fight infections. How Can Parents Help? • Breastfeeding – Feeding only breast milk for the first 6 months builds strong immunity. • Healthy foods – After 6 months, introduce soft foods like fruits, vegetables, and yogurt to support immunity. • Vaccination – Vaccines help babies fight serious diseases and keep them safe.

CHAPTER 3 Do Babies Have Low Immunity? • Clean hands and surroundings – Good hygiene practices prevent infections from spreading. • Keeping baby warm – Babies can't control body temperature well, so proper clothing is important. • Enough sleep – Sleep helps the body grow and build immunity. • Skin-to-skin contact – Holding and cuddling babies strengthens their body and comfort. Why Do Babies Get Sick Easily? • Their immune system is still learning to fight germs. • Mild illnesses help their body become stronger over time.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN By following the aforementioned simple steps, parents can help their baby build a strong and healthy immune system!

Nature – Immunity PassedThrough Genes Some children are born with stronger immunity, while others may have weaker defenses against illnesses. This comes from the genes they inherit from their parents. • For example, some children naturally fight off infections better, while others may be more prone to allergies or sickness. CHAPTER 4 Immunity – Nature vs. Nurture A child’s immune system is shaped by genetics (nature) and the environment (nurture) they grow up in.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN • However, genes are not the only factor—a child’s surroundings and lifestyle play a big role in strengthening immunity! Nurture – Helping Immunity Grow Stronger • Healthy food – Fruits, vegetables, milk, and proteins help the body fight germs. • Breastfeeding – The mother’s milk gives the baby special protection against infections. • Clean and smoke-free home – Fresh air keeps lungs healthy and prevents breathing problems.

• Avoid harmful chemicals – Less exposure to pollution, dust, and pesticides keeps kids safe. • Enough sleep – 9–12 hours of sleep helps the body heal and stay strong. • Physical act ivi ty – Running, playing, and outdoor time activate the immune system. • Sunlight for Vitamin D – Helps build strong bones and immunity. CHAPTER 4 Immunity – Nature vs. Nurture • Less stress, more love – A happy and relaxed child gets sick less often. How Does Early Life Shape Immunity? A baby’s immune system learns from surrounding exposure to mild infections, helping his/her body remember and fight germs better in the future. A child’s diet, sleep, and hygiene habits shape how strong the immune system becomes over time. By focusing on healthy habits, parents can help their children build a strong immune system, irrespective of their genetic makeup!

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN By focusing on healthy habits, parents can help their children build a strong immune system, irrespective of their genetic makeup!

CHAPTER 5 How to Know if Your Child Has Strong Immunity Children’s immune systems are constantly developing, which is why they may fall sick often. It’s normal for kids to have 6–8 viral infections per year, especially in environments like schools and daycare where they are exposed to different germs.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN Signs of a Strong Immune System • Healthy growth – A child gaining weight and height as expected indicates a well-functioning immune system. • Quick recovery – The body fights off mild infections like colds and fevers within a few days, showing strong immune defenses. • Good wound healing – Scrapes and cuts heal properly, which means the immune system is doing its job.

When toWorry AboutYour Child’s Health • Frequent hospitalizations – Repeated serious infections may indicate a weaker immune system. • Recurring skin or ear infections – Persistent infections can signal immune deficiency. • Slow growth – If a child isn’t gaining weight or height properly, it may mean their body is struggling to absorb nutrients and fight infections. • Chronic digestive or respiratory issues – Severe diarrhea, repeated chest infections, or breathing difficulties may point to an underlying immune problem. CHAPTER 5 How to Know if Your Child Has Strong Immunity

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN The Simple Rule for Parents If your child is active, happy, and growing well, their immune system is likely working ne. Occasional colds and mild illnesses are normal and help strengthen their immunity for the future!

CHAPTER 6 Mother’s Nutrition Matters KeyTakeaways for Expecting Mothers: • Eat a balanced diet – Include proteins, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats to support growth and immunity. • Avoid harmful substances – Stay away from alcohol, smoking, pollution, and excessive caffeine to protect the baby’s health. • Take prenatal supplements – Folic acid, iron, calcium, and omega-3 are essential for the baby’s development. A mother’s nutrition during pregnancy affects the baby’s growth, immunity, and long-term health. Eating well helps the baby develop strong defenses against illnesses.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN By maintaining a healthy diet, mothers give their babies an ideal start, ensuring better growth and immunity! How Nutrition Builds Immunity: • Nutrients shape the baby’s gut bacteria, which play a major role in immunity. • A strong immune system starts before birth with Vitamin D, Zinc, and antioxidants. • Proper nutrition helps babies fight infections better in early life.

CHAPTER 7 Mother’s Nutrition Matters Breast milk is Nature’s perfect food for babies, packed with nutrients and protective elements that support growth, immunity, and brain development. Why Breast Milk is Special: • Boosts immunity – Contains antibodies that fight infections and strengthens the baby’s defense system. • Supports brain development – Rich in DHA, helping improve learning and cognitive function. • Easy to digest – Naturally designed for babies, reducing colic and stomach issues.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN • Provides complete nutrition – Has proteins, vitamins, and minerals needed for healthy growth. • Safe and clean – No risk of contamination or preparation errors. • Strengthens bonding – Skin-to-skin contact releases hormones that create emotional security. • Helps mothers recover – Aids postpartum healing, reduces stress, and lowers health risks. Why the First 6 Months Matter Exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months protects against asthma, obesity, diabetes, and allergies, ensuring strong immunity for life. Breast milk is the best natural start for babies, giving them health, protection, and emotional comfort!

CHAPTER 8 Starting Solid Foods – How It Helps Immunity Why it’s Important: • Supports immunity – Provides essential vitamins, iron, and zinc. • Strengthens gut health – Helps develop healthy bacteria for digestion and defense. • Prevents infections – Delayed solid foods can lead to poor growth and more illnesses. At 6 months, babies need more nutrients than breast milk provides. Introducing soft, nutritious foods helps with growth and immunity.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN A balanced diet builds your baby’s immunity and physical strength. Best Practices: • Start with mashed fruits, vegetables, and rice. • Introduce iron-rich foods like lentils, eggs, and meat. • Avoid sugary drinks and processed foods. • Maintain clean hands and utensils for safe feeding.

How to Support Stomach Health: • Eat probiotics – Curd, buttermilk, and fermented foods add healthy bacteria. • Increase fiber – Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains help digestion and immunity. • Limit antibiotics – Overuse can destroy good bacteria, weakening defenses. • Stay hydrated – Water keeps digestion smooth and flushes toxins. CHAPTER 9 Good Gut Health = Strong Immunity The stomach is home to trillions of good bacteria that help digestion and boost immunity. 70 percent of the immune system is linked to gut health, making it essential for overall well-being.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN Signs of an Unhealthy Stomach: • Frequent stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation may indicate an imbalance. • Poor gut health can lead to weaker immunity and digestive issues. A healthy stomach means a strong immune system, helping kids stay happy and healthy!

CHAPTER 10 Frequent Fevers –When toWorry Young children commonly experience viral fevers as their immune system develops. Up to 8 fevers per year is normal and does not indicate weak immunity. What’s Normal? • Fever with mild cold or cough, resolving within a few days. • Recovery without antibiotics, showing a functioning immune response. • Child remains active, playful, and growing well.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN When to See a Doctor • Persistent fever that lasts several days without improvement. • Seizures, extreme weakness, or difficulty breathing. • Frequent hospital visits due to severe infections. Important Advice: • Avoid unnecessary antibiotics – Overuse can weaken natural immunity. • Trust your pediatrician – Not all fevers require medication. • Fevers help immunity – The body fights infections naturally, so don’t panic with every fever. A child’s immune system learns and strengthens with mild illnesses, making occasional fevers a normal part of growth!

CHAPTER 11 Are Allergies a Sign of Weak Immunity? Common Allergy Signs: • Sneezing, runny nose – Response to airborne allergens like dust or pollen. • Skin rashes and itching – Caused by allergens in food, insect bites, or fabrics. • Wheezing and coughing – Common in respiratory allergies like asthma. No, allergies don’t mean weak immunity. They occur when the immune system overreacts to harmless substances like dust, pollen, or certain foods. Instead of ignoring them, the body mistakenly treats them as threats, causing allergic symptoms.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN Key Takeaway: Allergies show immune sensitivity, not weakness. e best approach is managing symptoms, avoiding triggers, and supporting overall health rather than looking for immune boosters. What Parents Can Do: • Identify triggers – Dust, food, pets, or weather changes can cause reactions. • Followmedical advice – Allergy medications or preventive care help manage symptoms. • Maintain a clean environment – Reduce dust, avoid smoking indoors, and use air purifiers if needed.

CHAPTER 12 Constipation and Immunity – IsThere a Link? A child’s digestive health affects their immune system. Poor bowel habits can lead to stomach discomfort, reduced nutrient absorption, and weaker immunity. Signs of Constipation: • Less than 3 stools per week. • Painful stools, causing discomfort. • Hard, dry, or bloody stools due to straining.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN If constipation persists, consult a doctor. A healthy tummy supports a strong immune system, keeping your child active and well! SimpleWays to Improve Digestion: • Hydration – More water keeps stools soft and easy to pass. • High-fiber diet – Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains support gut health. • Regular toilet habits – Encourage a consistent routine to prevent stool buildup. • Physical activity – Movement stimulates digestion and prevents constipation. • Limit junk food – Sugary, processed foods slow digestion and harm gut bacteria.

CHAPTER 13 When ShouldYou See an Immunologist? Most children develop strong immunity naturally. However, in rare cases, primary immune deficiency (PID) can be present from birth, making them more prone to infections. Warning Signs: • Frequent hospital stays due to infections. • Serious infections like pneumonia occuring multiple times. • Poor weight gain despite proper nutrition. • Family history of immune-related conditions.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN Important Note: ese conditions are rare, but if needed, your pediatrician will suggest further checks. Early detection helps in getting the right care at the right time.

CHAPTER 14 Treatment for Children with Low Immunity PossibleTreatments: • Nutritional support – Ensuring enough vitamins, minerals, and proteins for immune function. • Medical therapies – Some chi ldren may need immunoglobulin therapy or other medical interventions. • Managing infections – Early treatment and preventive measures to reduce risks of severe illness. • Lifestyle adjustments – Avoiding exposure to polluted environments and practicing strict hygiene. In rare cases, some children may have confirmed immune deficiencies after medical tests. Doctors may recommend special care, medication, or specific treatments based on the condition.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN While treatment varies, most children can lead healthy lives with proper care and medical guidance.

Dos: • Breastfeed as long as possible for essential antibodies. • Provide a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables, proteins, and clean water. • Follow vaccine schedules to prevent serious infections. • Ensure enough sleep and physical activity for strong immunity. • Create a stress-free environment—a calm and happy child has better immune health. CHAPTER 15 Must-KnowTips for Parents to Build Immunity Naturally For most kids, good parenting is the best immunity booster! Their immune system develops through healthy habits, proper nutrition, and a clean environment.

IMMUNITYinCHILDREN Key Takeaway: Immunity builds over time, not overnight! Love, care, and simple healthy habits are the best ways to help your child grow strong and resilient. Don’ts: • Avoid unnecessary antibiotics, as they disrupt gut bacteria and weaken immunity. • Don’t panic over common colds or mild fevers—they help develop immunity. • Avoid sugary and processed foods and exposure to second-hand smoke—both can compromise a child’s immune system.

It needs utmost care...
